In 1583, on the rocky cliffs above Cala en Basset, the Torre de Cala en Basset (visible near the center of the ridgeline) was constructed. Part of a network of watchtowers along the southwestern coast of Mallorca, it served to monitor the passage between Mallorca and Sa Dragonera (the island visible near the center of these images with its distinctive lighthouse) and warn of approaching pirate ships. The secluded cove would later become a favored landing place for smugglers operating out of nearby Andratx. Centuries later, its attention turned toward the skies, being repurposed during the Spanish Civil War as an observation post for ships and aircraft. A number of structures were added to the site during this period. On 12 August 2026, hundreds of spectators gathered in the water, along nearby cliffs, and at the watchtower of Cala en Basset to watch the horizon once more.
